Note: The Optimized Edge Routing (OER) IOS Software feature has been renamed Performance Routing, and its scope has been widened. The command-line interface (CLI) for Performance Routing is currently the same as it has been for OER, and over time using the accepted CLI deprecation standards, the OER CLI will become the Performance Routing CLI.

Cisco Optimized Edge Routing (OER) automates routing in order to select the best path based on cost minimization, load distribution policy, and overall network performance. Cisco OER enables intelligent network traffic load distribution and dynamic failure detection of data paths at the WAN edge (for example, multihoming to the Internet or for intranet connectivity). Unlike other routing mechanisms, which use static routing metrics, Cisco OER makes adaptive and dynamic routing adjustments based on criteria such as response time, packet loss, jitter, mean opinion score (MOS), path availability, traffic load distribution, and cost minimization policies.
